Castor oil is probably the most-used ingredient for growing edges back, and the honest answer to whether it works is: partly, and not the way the marketing suggests.

Castor oil is thick, high in ricinoleic acid (a fatty acid that makes up roughly 85 to 90% of its composition), and has shown anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity in lab studies. What castor oil does do well, consistently, is cut down breakage. Its heavy, occlusive texture coats the hair shaft and locks in moisture. At the hairline, where edge hairs are short and fragile, keeping those hairs from snapping off is genuinely useful. You keep the length you're already growing. That's not nothing.

How to use castor oil on your edges:

1. Use Jamaican black castor oil or cold-pressed castor oil, not a heavily diluted product labeled "castor oil blend." 2. Is rosemary oil better than castor oil for growing edges back?

Rosemary oil has stronger human clinical evidence for hair growth than castor oil does. A 2015 randomized controlled trial in SKINmed found that rosemary oil matched 2% minoxidil for hair count after 6 months, with less scalp itching reported in the rosemary group. This is where a lot of well-meaning advice goes sideways. "Wear a protective style to protect your edges" is only true if the style isn't pulling on those same edges. Plenty of styles that are great for the length of your hair are actively harmful at the hairline.
